Why successful dermatologists use compounding pharmacy

In one of our previous blog articles we explained why dermatology and compounding make a “nice couple” or should have “a love affair”. Let us re-iterate some of the reasons.

  • Most skin conditions are treated with topical
  • Frequently, treatment consists of two or more topical medications.
  • Often, these medications come in different containers and different administration instructions.
  • Sometimes, skin conditions need to be treated with oral and topical
  • Compounding simplifies the administration process by combining multiple active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s) into one preparation with easy to follow instructions.
  • Compounding allows the selection of the exact strength for each API needed for the patient’s unique needs
  • Compounding allows the selection of the needed combination of the API’s for the patient’s situation.
  • Compounding allows the incorporation of API’s (medications) that may only be available commercially in oral form, into a topical This can reduce the concern for the oral medication’s side effects.
  • Compounding allows the dermatologist to select the most appropriate dosage form that meets the patient’s needs and preferences – cream, lotion, gel, ointment or combination of any of these. It is important to mention-most of the bases used in compounding have some therapeutic properties of their own. (Please check our blog post that explains types of bases, their properties and indications.)
  • Compounding is not only a convenient uniquely customized solution for your patient, but also a cost-effective Your patient will pay for one medication, so even if the insurance may not cover it, the cash price may be more affordable than the combined copays for the commercial medications.

These are only some of the reasons successful dermatologists use pharmaceutical compounding in their practice. As a result, the patient’s compliance is increased and the clinical outcome is improved.
